The media project “Telling Traces” explores the telling and passing-on of oral family histories. The mobile app for this project allows users to navigate a world map that attempts to eliminate the North / South bias. The app presents migratory trajectories through oral histories by using GPS and physical movement through space. As the user approximates key points on the map in their physical environment, they move from city to city, country to country, continent to continent on our subjective world map triggering oral family stories. Each location offers migration narratives, told and translated into various languages. In the app, the user listens to these, while forming their own oral and physical trajectory.
